We need to push hard on his Alzheimer’s. I wish Mary could actually issue a 72 hour hold on him as he is beyond a danger to himself and others

Thanks Brian for keeping us informed and updated on California. Although I don't live there now, I grew up in the South Bay area of LA County so it hits home in my memories. I can't imagine like you said going to bed all OK and waking up to being wiped out and homeless. I have been with State Farm for most of my life and didn't realize they uninsured so many people. I am glad Biden sent a blank check for 180 days (6 months) to provide the means to contain and assist those in dire need. I was blown away to hear how crass and downright uncaring Trump can be when people are suffering to exploit the situation to inflict political vengeance! He hasn't even taken office yet and you're right, it's a blessing Biden is to assist where Trump would play games to make matters worse. He doesn't even want to further the agenda to deal with Climate change and neither does Elon Musk the big EV/solar manufacturer which is so hypocritical it just stinks to high heaven. God save us!

Insurance companies always do that shit when there's a major disaster. I'm rather sick of them, too. They've been doing that crap for decades.

I remember my father as being very anti-insurance companies, saying they are nothing more than predators. This reminds me of how the mods conducted insurance for businesses!

Expand full comment

I'm probably as old as your father, and so what. This capitalistic system is what drives me crazy and insurance companies are a trillion dollar industry that has nerve to be stingy. Then again, so is everything else in this place. CEO's & executives are laughing at all of us ... all the way to the bank. But, what mods are you speaking of? That word might mean something different to me than it does you.

My father was born in 1910 and is deceased now or he would be 114 years old, but it goes to show you the outlook hasn't changed much! Typo s/b Mobs, you know the ones that burn your business down if you didn't pay for insurance to protect you from them?

Expand full comment

Oooooohhhhh, them. Hahahahaha. Yes I know about them well. Shit, that isn't insurance. Those are bodyguards. LOL I must've been a mobster in a previous life. I'm drawn to movies like that & have no idea why. I'm 67 and have seen insurance companies do this for a long time. Even about auto insurance claims. Put too many of those in and OUT you go!

Expand full comment

I'm heavily insured due to requirements and liability. But I would have to say that my experience with State Farm claims such as water damage twice, rental income losses, roof replacement, car accidents, etc. as been problem-free.

Expand full comment

Then you're not paying attention to the norms and your opinions are based only on you. I read a great deal and know what's going on in this country. I'm telling you, I've read about these things for decades, and not just State Farm. Insurance is a racket that people can't avoid, but they're disloyal to customers. Generally speaking. Start putting in large claims and you will see what I'm talking about.

Expand full comment

I consider myself informed as much as anyone about worldly matters, give my length of time on earth which exceeds yours, but one doesn't not take into consideration personal experiences as well. I think I agreed and certainly my father did that insurance is a "racket"! If it weren't for lenders requiring insurance, many more people would be uninsured too, and then what?

Expand full comment

Depends on what is being insured. I've been ripped off by insurance companies personally. I just don't feel like putting all that in here. I don't need outside evidence that it's a racket. It's a necessary evil AND a racket. Don't care how long you've been on this planet. That doesn't make you right when you're not. Just means nothing has happened to you, which doesn't mean crap isn't happening to others surrounding insurance. Cali is your evidence.

You're arguing for the sake of arguing, not because you're right here. That only makes me wonder what your motive for doing so is about. Rhetorically speaking. I really don't care, because I know the truth of the matter.

I'm sorry, not sure where you are getting your negative response to me. I concur that insurance is a "Racket" I don't know how many times or ways to say it, and I have also stated that it is a necessary evil too. Right now many people who did opt to add fire coverage riders given the high-risk conditions their home is situated in, will have the comfort of knowing they can rebuild with little to no cost out of pocket and have their rent paid while they are displaced and that would take a mountain of premiums to compensate the insurance company for, but areas like where I live that have few such events make up for it, and those that don't have it are left on the curb homeless sadly. Just because one insurance carrier won't carry that kind of risk insurance others will. State Farm itself does not provide earthquake insurance in its standard policy, but you can add a rider and pay extra to insure against that catastrophic event. I'm glad I had it when I was in an accident with an underinsured motorist. It's a love/hate relationship!

Expand full comment

Exactly! We just received an update to our homeowner's policy with a $1200 annual increase! We live in Florida and home insurance is hard to get so we are stuck with the company we have unless we risk a small company that can't protect us as we need. This large company knows what it is doing by raising prices now. WTF!

Thaz what I'm talking about, Ms. It's like a necessary SCAM and disturbing that there's nobody at the helm regulating these things anymore.

Brian, you have often sparked anger and frustration in me towards the MAGA depravity, but tonight you have brought me to tears. They are tears of grief...but only partly. Mainly I am crying out of rage. Blind rage.

I am so grateful that you are okay, for now, though your pain is obvious.

L. A. was my home in the 60's and early 70's, it's where I went to high school, and formed the longest lasting friendships of my life. Most of my family is still in north-central California, including my beloved 98 year old Mother-in-law.

I'm too emotional to explain myself, so I am doubly grateful you are able to articulate for all of us.

Fuck trump, MAGA, and the unicycles they rode in on. I'd like to parachute every one of them into the heart of the fire. They can each have a bottle of water.

brian, thx for your post. you're a good man and i greatly appreciate your good work.

i'm glad that u and your house are safe at this time. don't wait to pack your vehicle. do it now. u won't have the time and where-with-all to do it when they knock on your door to tell u to "get out now". i and my partner were evacuated for 3 wks this summer due to fire where i live in SE BC. i'm fortunately a dual us / can citizen now living in canada.

something u and others mite like to read is "fire weather" by john vallant which is about the fort mcmurray fire here in western canada. the conditions for that fire that wiped out the city, mostly comprised of folks who worked in the tar sands, were the same as what the LA area has been experiencing , ie, severe drought, low humidity, above avg temps. ideally the combination of these events could have warned governor, mayor, fire authorities and residents to prepare for strategic extreme readiness. ft. mcmurray officials hemmed and hawed for days until it was too late. there was no way to fight that fire. houses were burned to the ground in 2 minutes while igniting the house next door at the same time. for large sections of the city fire fighters gave up and pulled out to save their own lives.

yes, trump is a sick, deranged loose cannon and i, as well, would be overjoyed if he had a massive stroke while his right hand was on the bible attempting to pronounce all those big words of the oath of office.

thank you again for your good work. carry on, randy

I'm furious at this, being in LA. I'm old enough to remember a time that when a disaster struck, parties cooperated and worked together. The fact that he and his awful family and morally vacant suckups can't do ANYTHING at all to help and only serves to divide us. He's a cancer in the American lifeblood.
