As a Democrat, I know how hard it would be for former MAGA to adapt any aspect of that moniker. So I would like to encourage them to rebrand as #ConstitutionalConservatives so they can stand against Trump violating both of those principles.

Unfortunately, a huge part of the Felon's success has been in trashing the Constitution, so that too is almost certainly seen as normal. Schooling is a good piece for children currently learning, but reining in the disinformation (not mis-, bc it's intentional, not accidental!) by requiring "news" outlets to be something approaching truthful could work IF we could get states to agree. Because of the broad coverage of the First Amendment, unless we can change/refine it, we're stuck trying to pass those requirements in state governments. We all know how that's going to go.

No matter what, it's going to be a long, hard fight to get our government back. Part of that, I believe, lies in kids in their teens and twenties. Votersoftomorrow.org and Leaderswedeserve.com are both dedicated to educating and accurately informing young voters, as well as registering kids to vote. Malcolm Frost, the youngest Congressperson sitting, is very active in Southern Florida. All these groups need funding all the time, and they take their jobs very seriously. They see and understand young people and what we're fighting, right there on the ground! (Unlike me. I'm 60+ and furious about our "leaders," their wishy-washy refusal to take any position against Trump early in this term when it could have been stymied.) Thanks for reading! 💙💙💙

I saw Frost speak at the progressive conference in Chicago during the Democratic Convention week. He's brilliant, and represents just what our future leaders need to look, feel and sound like.

Excellent! I've never seen him in person, sadly, but I was so impressed with him when he ran the first time, I've kept track ever since. He really is brilliant, and is kind and ambitious too. He'll be a leader in a few more years, along with wonderful youngsters like the Justins in Tennessee (of TN 3 fame) and David Hogg and Bayley (don't know her last name) of Leaders We Deserve and Voters of Tomorrow, respectively. These are smart, ambitious kids who are driving the new Democrats, and I couldn't be more thrilled!

Thanks so much for replying. I get so tired of old folks saying how "kids these days" are lazy and entitled. Sure, some are, but that's been true of every generation EVER. Ours included. And old folks don't want to see anything else, too often. Thanks so much for renewing my faith in us old folks 😏😁!

We could solve the news problem by reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.

So the question isn’t if America has an appetite for Nazism after 10 years of Trump, but rather that is the appetizer?

Andrea Madden's avatar

That is so very good! For a woman of 84 years old, it is so hard for me to believe that a culture of young folks have been so lied to and has fallen for it line and sinker! Please can some one somewhere stop this maddening circle of life we are living in today! We need more some 40-60’s strong willed, educated and with integrity to step up to the plate to bat as it looks like we are in the 8th inning of the game!

If you are old enough to remember the Smokey the Bear ads from the 70’s(?), Only YOU can prevent forest fires!

Something’s gotta be done about Fox calling itself news. Invariably the misinformed and underinformed get their views from Fox.

Maybe someone will take it in their own hands!

Peter D's avatar

The real problem is we all sit here and whine that SOMEONE (other than me) needs to fix this. As Smokey the Bear say: ONLY YOU can prevent forest fires.

Isn't it funny how the most critical opponents of the Orange Menace suddenly have epiphanies and "realize" he's the Second Coming? JD Vance was so hostile to his candidacy in '16 he called him "America's Hitler". Now he couldn't get his nose any further up Trump's ass if he tried! Charlie Kirk was a hustler who made a shitload of money seducing our children into the Nazi cult. He, too, was a hypocrite of the first order! Even Elon was known to feel disdainful of the Trumpster before he was elected, then all of a sudden, realizing those fat govt. contracts were in Trump's control, he was his BFF!

Oh Bryan, I just finished your 2nd book: The Day After and I loved it even more than Shameless. What I really like about The Day After is that you don't just point out all that is wrong you offer understandable and sound possible solutions, if just the powers that be would take heed and do them and not just say they are good suggestions and pay only lip service to them. Thanks for all you do from this Canadian.

I’m just hoping after all this said and done and it may not be until 2029 that we will have more of us than of them and they’re going to have to either change or face the consequences. What I mean by change is not indoctrination or brainwashing it’s just making them see what they believe is so fundamentally wrong! All of their beliefs are based on hate, pure unadulterated hate, and that is what is wrong with what they believe!! And all the lies that they’ve been told on top of it by their dear leader, they’ve been indoctrinated and brainwashed, so it’s going to have to be like a de-programming, and a major intervention, but I think we can do it! And it won’t be with violence it will be with love!!

The left sucks at messaging. The right excels at it. Until the left learns to be as good at messaging as the right nothing will change. Also officials of both parties are so beholden to corporate interests. Nothing will change until we get the money out of politics. And for that we need to overturn Citizens United.

Susan's avatar

There are some candidates currently running for office who seem to be getting through the noise. I do agree that the right has been good at this. The left is getting better though.

Janet Wilson's avatar

...and can we please remember that the North American "left" is more centrist than a polarized, two party system would lead you to believe. Any civilized democracy is going to want to provide the citizenry with universal national health care, education and training opportunities, a wise and compassionate immigration system, and a robust social safety net.

The GOP is paid to win elections. They DEMs are paid, by about the same folks, to lose them.

thanks for the guest article, that is a disturbing perspective, hard to believe that people don't remember when both sides of the aisle shook hands and got things done

It is not clear how we reorient young folks. I am far from young. But it was College that truly opened my mind. I had friends in high school who were more aware than I, but talking politics was not in the forefront until makes started getting draft notices and lottery numbers

Information channels are so narrow now and I have seen young man torn (not literally but emotionally) between bro culture and empathy. Some did not survive to make an informed choice

I honestly do not know what a country can do outside of education and that won't help much as states or an administration try to rewrite history especially in public schools.

If democracy is to survive or, more hopefully, thrive children have to be encouraged to think for themselves. That has been a difficult for some parents and educators, but it is perpetually important.

The American public education system needs a thorough overhaul. But the Arts can help by providing inspiring movies, music, television, plays, sculptures and paintings.

There has to be hope, a belief that your life can make a Difference, and admiration of all those things that make for simple human decency and compassion, in communities where we take good active care of one another.

Barbara Craig's avatar

I agree! I am 70 and an active player in 2 concert bands. The music and fellow music nerds help keep hope alive. I have to travel further for art and sculpture but it keeps a heart pumping, too. I settle for books when travel isn't possible.
