People in the US should boycott as well

𝑻𝒘𝒆𝒍𝒗𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒅𝒈𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒊𝒏 𝒂 𝑺𝒖𝒊𝒕's avatar

Well, I don't give a fuck about soccer and wasn't planning on going in the first place, so I'm not sure my boycott would mean anything. But, yeah, it would be awesome if literally nobody but the players showed up. Actually, it would be awesome if the US soccer team just said "Nope, we don't feel like winning for America in the state America is currently in," and then they didn't show up either.

Karen's avatar

The teams should not show up

Grant Rowson's avatar

There's already talk about that, in some countries (to be seen yet if they will actually do such).

Shades of the 1980 Moscow Olympics, where USA (and some other countries) boycotted the Games over Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

Grant Rowson's avatar

But boycotting the sponsors -- or maybe more specifically, PROTESTING against the sponsors -- might make a difference. Awkwardly, most of those sponsors positioned themselves before Trump got elected the 2nd time, so spent millions getting the sponsorship and we're expecting a political backlash. Foreigners not attending the games would be devastating.

So if American citizens are vocally pointing out these issues to them, they will see their investment in jeopardy, and then that brings pressure upon FIFA and US Government.

Pete Lister's avatar

That said, let's not forget the players from the Olympics who trained for years, only to have their chances smashed on the rock of politics. I'm not saying NOT to boycott American World Cup events, I'm just suggesting we keep the athletes in our thoughts.

Tim Pendergast's avatar

Wondering how I can boycott something I pay zero attention to. FIFA is even more corrupt than Trump or IOC.

Vicki's avatar

Nothing is MORE corrupt than Trump.

LindyLoo's avatar

Maybe his incompetent imbecile sons !

Tim Pendergast's avatar

You only think Trump is more corrupt because he is so gross and obvious about it, but FIFA has been at it a lot longer, deeper and better than Trump. Sports in general is totally corrupt from top to bottom. Just look at the way the Big 4 pro sports leagues in the US extort taxpayer money out of cities and states for their billion dollar stadiums.

Debra MacKillop's avatar

trump lives for the US being in the limelight and trump taking all the credit, it will matter more to him how the world responds to high profile events to take place in the US like Olympics and World Cup, than it matters to him if ICE kills a bunch of Americans.

Mo Scofield's avatar

Move the games scheduled for the US to another venue in Canada or Mexico.

If enough venues aren't available in Canada & Mexico, then consider Puerto Rico, Greenland, Iceland & Denmark!

Real Apprentice's avatar

Yep. Dead Americans barely register, but threaten his orange spotlight and suddenly it’s DEFCON 1. World Cup optics matter more to him than human lives. That’s the whole presidency in one sentence.

Leigh Hamilton's avatar

You are exactly right.

M Jo.'s avatar

Unfortunately, and sadly, true. His cancerous ego means more to him than human life

Pete Lister's avatar

Sounds bad, Debra, when you put it THAT way.

J. Sena's avatar

Boycott the sponsors.

Tim Pendergast's avatar

A good suggestion, although I do most of my shopping at thrift stores.

Janet Alderton's avatar

Good for you!

You are living more lightly on our planet than most people.

Leigh Hamilton's avatar

If you don't watch on TV, you've boycotted the sponsors. They pay extremely close attention to who tunes in.

rayray's avatar

I was wondering about just that, I couldn't care less about this kind of event

Fred Jonas's avatar

rayray and Tim Prendergast, don't forget how the clown loves a crowd. He thinks that, and everything else, are about him. He will feel it.

Fred Jonas's avatar

As Steve French says in his comment.

Janet Alderton's avatar

You could boycott people who openly suck up to Trump, like Jeff Bezos, who owns the Washington Post and still owns a significant share of Amazon stock.

Then there is Tesla, etc.

Mehdididit's avatar

Many of us have been doing that for a year now! I also encourage people to deny the technogarchs your data. They make money off of your data and then use it against you. You can do this by using websites instead of Apps, dumping your social media accounts and, probably most importantly, spending cash instead of using cards. I also use a VPN and put myself in Europe because they still have privacy laws and it’s easy to opt out of data collection. I also had my online presence scrubbed. I never used social media so that part was easy.

Tim Pendergast's avatar

I have already cut my Amazon buying to solely third party sales, just the occasional used book, CD, or DVD. Never had Amazon Prime, never will. Boycotting Tesla is easy as I've never been able to afford one. Pretty sure there is nothing else that Musk produces that I need or could afford.

Debra MacKillop's avatar

that makes no sense. trump controls life for 350Mil+ Americans and influences life for the globe, could destroy the globe if wanted. FIFA and IOC just have control over some sports events. That's the reality check.

Mehdididit's avatar

He can be brought down. It just takes a concerted, global effort. Canada has escaped his grasp. NATO is doing exercises to which the US hasn’t been invited. He was largely ignored at DAVOS. Nobody greeted his arrival, or cared when he departed. He has ruined our country’s reputation.

Mary's avatar

But he still claims the US is now "respected again". Such a fool.

Pete Lister's avatar

Actually, many folks from other countries have expressed support for Americans, while pitying us because of the burden of corrupt government that we're currently saddled with. My non-domestic correspondents all agree that he has to go, and support our efforts to "make it so."

Mehdididit's avatar

He also claims he won in 2020. He creates his own reality to justify his delusional behavior.

Leigh Hamilton's avatar

I have another name for him.

Leigh Hamilton's avatar

I agree with you 100%. But he's still systematically burning the U.S. to the ground - and quite successfully. We're marching and protesting as we should, but it's going to take more than that. If the world is effected by Trump's policies, then the world is going to have to contribute to removing him, and if they want to do it without war, then moving the World Cup to another country is one way to smack him down.

Pete Lister's avatar

Any way is a good way.

Leigh Hamilton's avatar

There can even be more than one way. Lots of ways would be okay, too.

Lynn Garza's avatar

THAT is why they are buddies .

I do not imagine for one moment that FIFA under its present leadership will do the right thing - morally and for the sport itself - but national teams and fans themselves should take control and boycott US matches. Otherwise the World Cup will just be a tool for the Trump regime, if it does not (as seems increasingly likely) turn into a total fiasco anyway. Players and fans who choose to go to the US to watch matches will be helping to enrich and empower Trump's regime. They will be doing nothing nothing positive for the sport.

Ruby Brown's avatar

They may be corrupt, I do not know. But Trump is beyond corrupt!

takeda's avatar

Ordinary people cannot afford the tickets and the rich class actually is behind trump, so I don't expect much difference.

Some of the games supposed to happen in my city, I actually wish it was cancelled, it won't be anything but road closures and worse traffic.

I think players themselves refusing to participate would be much more effective. I don't plan on watching it either.

Leigh Hamilton's avatar

Exactly. If we can't go (and I don't want to under any circumstances) then we can boycott it on TV. The sponsors won't like that. They watch those numbers like hawks.

Maria Pickworth's avatar

I disagree with that. Real sports fans will save to go to a World Cup they are willing to forgo other holidays etc for it.

Mehdididit's avatar

It’s so outrageously expensive that I doubt most people can afford to go.

celeste k.'s avatar

Bryan didn't mention trump's intent to send ICE to Italy, another threat and affront to that European country.

Every country, and every American, should boycott the World Cup in America.

Karen's avatar

We are. We need the rest of the world to join us

Ivelisse Blanco's avatar

We love soccer but we will not be patronizing in any way (merch, boycotting sponsors like McDonald’s, viewing, etc.), this year and maybe the next also if things do not change.

Nick's avatar

I agree- I refuse to watch- just another in a long list of activities and companies to boycott

Steve French • Ink's avatar

You know trump will want to be front and center - don’t give him any platform when it can be avoided

Lance Khrome's avatar

Fucker wants to run off with the FIFA WC Trophy, bank it...bastard Infantino will let him, ffs!

Steve French • Ink's avatar

It’s made of gold - of course he does

Sean W's avatar

t'rumpty-dumbty is like an ole buzzard, he dribbles all over gaudy, tacky, shiny, gold stuff, but there need to be enough people to jeer him down during his

hour long gaslighting session and mocking him every time he makes a gesture. I'll be fun and truly piss him off!!) 50-75 young folks should do it

Ford Regina's avatar

I had no idea it was made of gold. No wonder why he wanted it. He is a greedy **!

Steve French • Ink's avatar

Sorry, gold paint… but that doesn’t change anything

Catherine Witherell's avatar

It changes it for me.

Juliet Forman's avatar

Just viewed the Chelsea trophy footage. The guy is vile. Truly!

Ethereal Fairy's avatar

Yes, a quarter million dollar trophy, designed by Tiffany co. stolen by a kleptomaniac, old man who had no right to it, the players who actually won , get a cheap replica. The corrupt FIFA dude was stupid, to try and flatter trump by bringing it by for a photo op.

sandy bassett's avatar

boycott fifa. boycott the olympics. tariff the US. the only things rump understands are money and power, they are his oxygen.

Kathy Davidson's avatar

Yes!! Boycott them all!

AndyO's avatar

God, I can imagine his welcome speech now. World Cup opening ceremony soeeches are more interminable than Olympic ones. Throw self-aggrandisement and orobably some more faux awards frim FIFA into the mix and it'll be a global broadcast from the Rest Home for the Perpetually Bewildered. Imagine the boos...

Mary Kostanski's avatar

They will. Nobody says no to him.

Steve French • Ink's avatar

Trump just closed down the “Trump Kennedy center” because of resignations and poor turnout. If everyone just turns their backs to the guy, that’s the way to say no.

Steve French • Ink's avatar

I do. I stopped drinking Jack and coke. We vote with our wallets.

Rose Mary's avatar

He always want to be front , and I think that is part of him from day one💅😺🌹

Evie LeClercq's avatar

While it will hurt many Americans, it’s the message that needs to be sent to this regime. They know most of our nation and the world is against them, but they are criminals so they don’t seem to care. They need to keep being reminded.

Sherri's avatar

We’re being hurt anyway so take him down too!

NANCY Jambor's avatar

My son , an avid fan, had already decided to “boycott “ the World Cup because FIFA is so corrupt.. birds of a feather blah blah. This is a solid strategy for all the right reasons and hits the DJT regime in the wallet! They are all about the filthy lucre! Let em eat crumbs

Eva S's avatar

Do it! Boycott!!!

Rick kisbany's avatar

I like it. Think about bringing it to an even greater height. Boycott USA period.

Declan's avatar

The regime has produced a NSPM #7 (National Security memo) that accuses any American of domestic terrorism if they damage or go against capitalism. They may have anticipated economic boycotfs....

Mehdididit's avatar

That doesn’t frighten me. So far, none of that has held up in court. They’ve called Indivisible and No Kings terrorist organizations. Both emphasize nonviolence. A memo isn’t a law, it’s just a regime wish. We need not succumb.

Also true of the DHS memo allowing warrantless home searches by ICE terrorists. That’s still a violation of constitutional rights.

Janet Alderton's avatar

They can go fuck themselves.

No one is telling me how I can spend or not spend my money.

Rick kisbany's avatar

Selectively spend to save the America we knew.

Janet Alderton's avatar

Well-stated, Rick.

My use of profanity, above, is a first for this 75-year-old grandmother.

Dorothy's avatar

You state what most of us are feeling, so you are in good company. My cursing lately could make a sailor blush! ☺️

Mehdididit's avatar

Go Janet! It’s liberating, isn’t it?

Mary's avatar

No worries. One of the funny protest signs I saw last year was something like this: "It's been six months of this administration and I use the word f**k like it's a comma". I'm pretty sure this regime has brought out the sailor in many of us.

Patricia Fehrenbacher's avatar

I love it ! May have to make that my next protest sign!!!

Rick kisbany's avatar

Lol. Love it. I’m 73. 😄

Dorothy's avatar

70 here, and I no longer mince words either! 😄

Rick kisbany's avatar

This will end, or we become subjects of tyranny.

Karin Hemmingsen's avatar

As much as I love soccer, I am all for a boycott. And especially if the FOX network hosts the games again, I will boycott them on TV. Furthermore, if I was a citizen of another country, I would certainly not travel to the US - no telling what kind of reception you would get at the border, whether coming of going.

PeachBlossom's avatar

There's also no telling if you'd be allowed to return to your home country.

Peggy Raines's avatar

Move the World Cup. Would Canada or Mexico be interested in hosting this event?

Neil Ashton's avatar

Both Canada and Mexico are hosting matches - but they don’t have the capacity to host all the US dates as well.

Jeremy Krall's avatar

Time to extend the World Cup so the matches only happen in those two countries!

Bre's avatar

Canada can! We have plenty of capacity as does Mexico i bet.

Eva S's avatar

I believe they actually are hosting some matches. Mexico at least, not sure about Canada.

Turbinator's avatar

Canada & Mexico are already scheduled to host 25+ matches of the tournament.... FIFA could Just move ALL the matches out of the US and into these two countries....

I bet they'd end up making more $$ in the end....

Earl Richards's avatar

Everybody should boycott everything in this country-everything! We need the world's help getting rid of the orange felon fascist traitor. WE also need to boycott and spend only what is absolutely necessary and when doing so avoid as much as possible spending it at any place that supports this treasonous regime

Eva S's avatar

Start with Amazon. The convenience isn’t worth it. Don’t buy anything from Bezos.

Dr. Judith Schlesinger's avatar

It costs a little more and takes a little longer, but do not buy *anything* from Bezos. You can go to the source. Besides, his unpoliced third-party vendors often rip you off, like sending you a CD that has the right cover but the wrong insides. There is no recourse. Or they claim to send you Canon ink "tomorrow" (it was an emergency) and then after three days' delay, send nothing at all for a list of possible generic reasons. Amazon prime is also disposable.

They care nothing about their customers or their employees. A friend's wife was T-boned by an Amazon truck trying to save time; the impact to her continues. An Amazon employee fell off his truck near my house, was bleeding profusely, but was more concerned with getting back to work than the gush on his leg.

Mehdididit's avatar

The delivery drivers aren’t Amazon employees. They are contract workers. Some have better employers than others. Also true of FedEx. Only UPS drivers work for the company on their uniform. They are also unionized. They have benefits and make a good living. That’s why they have time to be nice and take care of their customers.

Dr. Judith Schlesinger's avatar

Thanks for the clarification. I didn't know that. But my boycotting of amazon will continue!

Mehdididit's avatar

To be clear! I’m all for dumping all things Amazon. For my final Bezos FU I used my last audible credits to get Ellie Mystal’s newest books on law reforms to neuter the power of oligarchs.

Dr. Judith Schlesinger's avatar

Audible reminds me! My book was offered on amazon (not my idea). They removed several five-star reviews, bizarrely claiming those writers were related to me, when they clearly were not, but allowed a l-star from someone who said he was using his wife's account and didn't even read it. More? They messed with the price of the paperback, at one point charging half the set price, and decided to make my e-book free. I was not consulted and never got a dime. Forget about their "author's customer service." That was someone halfway around the world who barely spoke English and could not deviate from whatever was written on her card...

Mehdididit's avatar

I quit shopping at Amazon after the inauguration and canceled my prime membership. Truth is, if you go directly to the manufacturer of the product you want, it’s often cheaper, and in my experience, you get better customer service.

Jacqueline Marshall's avatar

I am 81 years old & virtually welded to my Kindle. As much as this reader is part of my life, I bought my very last book from Amazon two months ago. I guess this won't hurt them much, but every little helps.

rebecca's avatar

You can get all the books you want on your kindle from your public library.

Earl Richards's avatar

Plus you meet the nicest people at the library

Monica Mac's avatar

Join NetGalley. You can request books to read for FREE, they get sent directly to your Kindle, in exchange for a review. I have been doing this for 10 years now and have plenty of books to read to keep me busy :) Put the reviews on Goodreads and yes, Amazon, but just don't buy any books from them. You can still leave your reviews there though.

Also welded to my Kindle!

When I leave the house there are 3 things I cannot forget: my phone, my glasses and my Kindle.

rebecca's avatar

Jacqueline, get your books on your kindle from your public library. Voila!

Tricia's avatar

I can’t believe people still shop there. Everything you buy is money in Bezos’ pockets. We made him an oligarch.

Mary Fuller's avatar

Ok 🤷‍♂️

Real Apprentice's avatar

Hit the wallet, starve the spotlight, and suddenly the “strongman” starts whining on Truth Social. Just like when Jimmy Kimmel’s advertisers flinched after Trump started tantruming, it was a reminder that money talks louder than his rallies.

Simon HOLDEN's avatar

As a British immigrant to the US I sincerely hope that a coordinated boycott happens. I love “football” but the sport cannot condone what’s going on in America by participating in the event. The countries who boycott will be in the history books as opposing the fascist Trump regime and the world will be better off by taking a strong stand.

Penny's avatar

I’ve seen Americans all over social media encouraging other countries to boycott the World Cup. 😊

Pat Robinson's avatar

I don't know which tv stations are covering the games but we need to tell them as well that we will not be watching, and the sponsors.

Mehdididit's avatar

Good point! Threatening sponsors with boycotts has worked in the past.

Shawn Hurst's avatar

DO IT!! #BOYCOTTOLYMPICS

mnakloon's avatar

Fuck yes, EVERYONE should boycott this! Why would anyone want to come to this Nazi regime country with brown shirts murdering and disappearing people, including citizens??? Stay away from the toxic USA

Cathryn Tilley's avatar

Boycott!! I know members of my family have decided it’s too dangerous to go and definitely choosing to boycott.
